Song Text
Ah, I do have a lot of favorite topics here in English class but this might just occupy the top spot. I forgot specifically the time period when we learned this but it was definitely half while online school at the dorm and half while offline school here in DW. As always, part of Mr. Ach's teaching habit, we dive head first to the assignment first. We were told to analyze 2 songs of his choice, namely P!nk's Family Portrait and Audioslave's Like a Stone; you see I was familiar already with Like a Stone but I didn't recognize this P!nk song, I'm guessing these are Mr. Ach's favorite songs back in the day?
Moving on, a combination of reading through the lines of the lyrics, the internet, and actually watching the music video helped me nailed this task. P!nk's Family Portrait is actually more on the trickier side than Audioslave's because the music video is way visual and open to lots of interpretations. Heartbreaking actually, watching the video and reading other people's comment saying they experience the same thing and can relate to the lyrics. Like a Stone I think I first heard on a 2000s pop punk-alt rock playlist, I haven't really paid attention to the lyrics up until this project and it is almost as upsetting. My bad I guess for only paying attention to the incredible bass line.
This could just be me having the memory of a goldfish but I don't think there was ever a proper PowerPoint containing the material of this subject, not that I'm complaining because I think this doesn't really need it anyway. Song text basically means discussing a specific song and its lyrics, reading through the lines, dissecting its meaning, and overall just explains what this song is trying to portray.
My favorite part comes next, which is the group project talking about a specific album. Thank god I got Drake, a 21st century musician that I'm absolutely familiar with which makes this 10x less difficult. I got paired up with Kira, Zee, and Ossa and I immediately assigned them and myself tasks. Why I said a 21st century musician makes this easier is because tons of information about each songs can be found with ease on the internet, comparing to other albums that the rest of the groups had, like Sasha's group with Metallica, I concur it isn't as easy.
Drake actually is my favorite musician in the Hip Hop genre category, a lot of people think he's overrated but I think he's the perfect package here; killer verses, great voice (both for rapping and singing, which a lot of rapper cant do), immaculate beat, and meaningful lyrics. With this project, I discovered new things about my favorite rapper that puts things into perspectives, like how the difficulties he had to overcome in his new lifestyle, past mistakes, and conversations about life in general. I mean I have listened to the Take Care album more than 10 times now but I haven't genuinely dove down to the lyrics and come upon these information, which proves how great of a story teller he is.
Had a 10/10 experience explaining our PowerPoint to Mr. Ach the other day, even ran out of breath at some point, but it was so exciting and I'm kind of sad the lesson is over now :/
